JACL working for Nisei soldiers stamp
The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) is hoping to obtain 20,000
signatures by October 31 in support of a U.S. postage stamp honoring Nisei
(second-generation Japanese Americans) who served in the United States armed
forces during World War II. The Postal Service (USPS) announced that the stamp
proposal will be reviewed by its Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) as
early as this month.
During World War II, JACL argued for and won the right of Japanese Americans
to serve in the military, even while many of their families were unjustly held
in U.S. internment camps. The resulting 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team
became the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in American
history. Its awards include eight Presidential Citations and twenty-one Medals
of Honor.
Signatures are being collected online at <www.ipetitions.com/petition/Nisei_Stamp/index.html>.
Signed petitions and letters of support may also be sent to the JACL, 1765
Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94115. All signatures will be forwarded to the
CSAC.
